Greetings from Cairo.

We have been made very welcome by the Sisters, Teachers and students of St Clare's College. We are settling in quite well amidst the hustle and bustle of Cairo , trying hard to negotiate the change in culture with very few Arabic language skills. We have managed to recognise the numbers, though!

After some informative input from an Egyptian teacher Madame Lydia and a young local woman, Jasmine, we felt ready for our visit to meet Dr Wahid and the Zebeleen (garbage picker) women of Mokkatim.

No-one and nothing could prepare us for such an experience. Dr Wahid and others are doing a wonderful job of reaching out to those who live in such difficult and oppressive surroundings amid the garbage that is their only means of  income.

Similarly, the Sudanese Refugee school was a sea of broad white smiles and beautiful brown eyes. These children were a delight to visit and made us feel most welcome even offering to share what little food they had for lunch, with us.

We have also met two groups of quite impressive young woman who are also committed to those in need and the youth in the Cairo area.

As a group, we have celebrated mass in Arabic and English, both in St Clare's Chapel here, and at a Greek Church within walking distance.

Only one week has passed and we have seen and experienced so much of this intriguing city. We look forward to the challenges ahead. Each new experience gives us food for thought and reflection

Speaking of which, the Sisters are making sure we are well nourished both spiritually and physically in this beautiful convent.

So, until next time, Ma-Salema from Cairo and best wishes,

Clare, Margaret, Jacinta, Maryanne, Bev and Maree.
